The Furniture Industry: Why 20GA Fine Wire Staples Are Essential for High-Precision Upholstery

In high-end furniture manufacturing, the most expensive defects are often invisible at first glance: a slightly torn fabric, a wooden frame weakened by staples placed too close together, or a crown showing through fine leather. In most cases, the root cause is the choice of gauge, series and point profile. That is why the 20GA fine wire staple has become the performance standard for precision industrial upholstery in Canadian plants.

1) Discretion on impact: three series to fit your frame geometry

Upholstery requires securing delicate fabrics, leathers or membranes to wooden frames without marking the surface. The fine wire of the 20GA staple lets the crown sit flush within the textile fibres rather than crushing them.

Compared with thicker gauges (such as 16GA or 18GA), the 20GA minimizes material perforation and limits micro-tears. Shur-Fast's 20GA line comes in a galvanized finish and three series, matched to fabric weight and frame geometry:

  • 5400 Series (3/16" narrow crown): ideal for fine leathers and detailed work where the crown needs to virtually disappear.
  • A11 / T50 Series (3/8" crown): the versatile standard for everyday assemblies across the industry.
  • 5000 Series (1/2" wide crown): excellent for heavier woven textiles and backing materials that need a broader holding surface.

2) Point profiles

  • ICC Point: used with thinner substrates, where the staple must seat securely without blowing through. Its seating pattern maximizes holding power.
  • KO Point: gives clamp-like holding power, with customizable leg lengths to suit your exact substrate thickness.

3) Complex geometries: controlled spacing, protected frames

Upholstery often calls for several staples placed close together to follow tight corners, curves and tufting patterns, without weakening the wooden frame.

Because of its narrow cross-section, the 20GA staple displaces much less wood on impact than heavier gauges. You can tighten the spacing as the geometry demands, with much less risk of frame splitting or premature fabric tearing. Operators can adjust on the fly: a narrower crown (5400 Series) for detailed curved work, or a wider crown (5000 Series) for long straight runs.
